  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • A pinch of ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Blanch Cabbage: Boil water, blanch cabbage leaves for 2–3 minutes, then drain and set aside.
  3. Cook the Filling: Sauté onion and garlic in oil for 5 minutes. Add ground meat, season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg, then cook until browned. Stir in cooked rice and remove from heat.
  4. Assemble: Layer cabbage, meat mixture, and béchamel sauce in the baking dish, repeating layers. End with béchamel and sprinkle cheese if using.
  5. Bake Covered: Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake uncovered for 15 more minutes until golden and bubbling.
